A retinal exam requires that you be in our office a minimum of 1 1/2 to 2 hours. After completing a questionnaire, an initial assessment will be performed. We will obtain the history of your eye problem and check your vision and eye pressure. Dilating eye drops will be administered to open your pupils. It will take approximately 20 to 30 minutes for the dilating drops to take effect. It will be necessary for you to wait 30 minutes before seeing our physician.
The eye examination requires very bright lights. These may be uncomfortable but are not harmful. Following the examination, our physician will discuss the findings with you and may recommend further testing. A consultation report will be sent to your medical doctor. Your eyes will remain dilated for several hours and we recommend that someone drive you home.
Retinal Consultants of Southern California receives urgent referrals from outside physicians. Therefore, you may not be seen in the order of your arrival. We appreciate your understanding if you must wait slightly longer than you anticipated.
